Get him some clothes for when he is 6month to a year old. Most people always get just baby/newborn clothes. When they baby gets bigger, moms don't always have alot of clothes for them. Think about getting him clothes for when he gets older.

Diapers, wipes, newborn pacifiers, lotion, baby bath soap, baby powder, diaper cream, little grooming set (comb, brush, nail clippers)
Bring over some food that they can put into the freezer and later heat it up as needed.
Parents of a newborn get a lot of attention at first, but then the thrill wears off and they need the help later and don't have it - offer to come over, watch the baby or make dinner for them.
Make it a cute certificate that they can redeem when they really need it.
other ideas:
if the parents like sports:
a tiny baseball glove and local team uniform
a tiny football and local team uniform
gift certificate/tickets for a night out at a theater with your offer of baby sitting.

Diapers are a must have but be sure to get different sizes, cause babies grow out of newborn really fast. I liked the oneiz outfits cause they were easy to change and kids get really messy. Bottles, binkies, and cribs (unless on a register) are bad choices cause those are to the parents liking.( not to be rude) I have two kids and those are the thing I ended up taking back for the ones I liked. A gift bag of small things will work well.

Diapers!! because there are a lot of things that mom's dont use and diapers aren't one of them. You could also get a gift basket full of baby shampoo, lotion ect, as well as a pack of onesies. Also rattles are a good thing for when they get a little bit older. sorry for the tangent. I have a 8 1/2 month old baby and i got a lot of stuff that I never used

I would take a look at there registry first.. some people get the same items for babies and then the parents end up exchanging it for something else... so I would ask the mom and dad what they really needed... I really wanted a swing... because I could put the baby all around the house and still do things I needed to....

Seriously - diapers and wipes were the BEST gift that I received. Not very glamorous, but very useful. You could combine it with a diaper wipe warmer (babies r us or Target). OR a gift card to Babies R Us.

It depends on what the parents already have. Most times they are set as far as clothing and baby equpment go. I usually give diapers, wipes, baby shampoo, etc. These are things that are needed and will be used!
