On my back-up desktop I have two bad ( apparently ) components :
1. Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB ata/133 HDD - this has the wide 39 pin ( double row ) connection for my m'board

2. Omega-Tech 512MB DDR-133MHZ

If I change I might as well upgrade so I selected the following from New Egg :
1. Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 HDT725032VLAT80 (0A33405) 320GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA133 Hard Drive - Price ( USA ) 79.99 usd
2. Patriot 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory - Price ( USA ) 65.99 usd ( less 10 rebate )

Can anyone advise, are these compatible with my old parts, and any advice what I could do better with.

Many thanks for any help.

Please don't get too tech on me, I'm an old f*rt just barely keeping up as it is !

Thanks to all of you guys for some really excellent info, I'll get on with the RAM question right away.
I just noticed that the Omega-Tech unit I have says that it has "Life time warranty", hmmm, I wonder if that is true.
Also, I am waiting delivery of an upgrade IGB RAM unit for my laptop, will the old 512 from the laptop work with my desktop ?
Thanks again, very much appreciated. :-)))

Drat ! I waqs just checking and found that I made an error in my original question. The old RAM unit is 333 MHZ, not 133 as I first wrote, does that change the situation ?
Sorry......old f*rt disease strikes again.

The hard drive will work. The only requirement for compatible between hard drives is the connector between the hard drive and the mother board. As both drives are IDE, they are compatible.

The memory is a different issue. The older memory is DDR style with a 133 speed. The new memory is considerable faster at 800. Odds are that a motherboard designed for the old 133 memory will not be able to handle memory that much faster. Or if it does, it will only run it at 133, not 800. Would you need to check the specification for the mother board to see what the fastest chip it can handle is.

My advice would be to check around more for PC133 memory. It is still very common, and because of its age, very cheap. You should be able to find a couple 512 chips (they are best in pairs) for next to nothing. That way you are sure the board will be able to use it.

We old f...need to stick together. It wont Work! Dont do it! PC133 memory IS NOT compatable with
6400 memory. The hard drive, however, should work. Remember you will have to reload the OS, and you will be subject to Microsoft activation hassel (MAH) because you have been changing things. If you want to avoid MAH, get a free, good, open source software such as www.kubuntu.org

the hard drive is ok you can change that but the memory will be 133 and any new memory has to be 133 if you system will surport it you can go for 2 x 512mb = 1024 mb

Yes to hard drive
No to memory you need to stick with the memory type you have already and check with the board manufacturers site to see how much memory it supports

As the other guys said, the Hard Drive will work no probs.

The RAM clearly won't, however the link below takes you to some RAM that will, just buy it and plug it into your motherboard, no problem.
