Make sure you go 5 star, wherever you end up. It might be a bit more expensive but you'll be glad you did. I was there in January and we went to Varadero. I would recommend it to anyone, it's a lovely place and there is a great beach with watersports etc. There are loads of hotels right on the beach and you should be able to find a vacancy easy enough.
Depending on how long you're staying for, you should try and get a visit to Havana. There you can visit the old town, revolution square, a cigar factory and the world famous Club Tropicana. Your tour operator will have a load of trips and excursions and this is usually one of them, as well as swimming with dolphins, fishing, horse-riding...pretty much something for everyone.
Before you go, buy a load of travel sized toiletries. The people of Cuba get paid the equivalent of about £12 a month in some cases and things like toiletries are very expensive there. Just leave a couple of shampoo bottles for your maid and you'll get great service. They also appreciate it if you give them any unwanted items of clothing - poverty is rife in Cuba.
But the people are very friendly and it is probably the most safe of all the Caribbean islands. Hope you get something organised and enjoy yourself as much as I did - remember the sun cream though, the sun is very strong out there!

Yup, been to Varadero.. paradise on Earth.
I stayed at the Tuxpan which was a German resort, and I didn't like it at all. The guests were rude and never tipped, and the food was terrible.
I would suggest that you stay in one the Melia resorts, there is a spectacular one called Melia Las Americas, it's kind of expensive, but looked devine.
The beaches in Varadero are like no other, clean, beautiful, and very safe.
If you get the opportunity to take the day trip into Havana, I highly recommend it. It's a bus tour, and during the day you tour Havana, which is amazing, then at night they will take you to the CopaCabana.. which is fabulous.
Just remember, that if you are travelling to Cuba, be nice and tip the staff. They work very hard for very little. When i was there, I left a couple of dollars a day, and many tolietries.
I also brought gum and candy to give to the kids in Havana.
Have a wonderful trip!

Most of the best hotels are foreign-owned and on the Varadero coast: beautiful beaches there, too. Havana is worth a visit, along with Hemingway's old house but, after a while, one town slave square is much like another.
Because of the communist regime there are few beggars but a lot of women beg for soap ("sabon") because it's expensive for them, but not for you. Raid the hotel bathroom.
The National hotel looks a bit sorry for itself now, like most things in Havana.
P.S. Good place to go if you don't like Americans. Technically, it's illegal for US citizens to visit Cuba.

I have not been to Cuba for over 65 years for a short visit. I don't know if the National is still exists, but it was the height of luxury. Contact the the Chamber of Commerce in S..Florida where there is a large Cuban population. They will be able to give you accurate information.
