If you go to Auto Zone they'll scan it for free and if there are no codes found they can clear the light for you.
Seriously, I do it all the time. I get Auto Zone to scan it, tell me whats wrong, I buy the part put it in and take my car back to them to clear the code. It seriously works. I swear!

There are many components that work together in the engine to maintain optimal engine performance and economy.
A service engine soon, or check engine light indicates that there is a sensor that is reading a condition that is "out of range".
Simply resetting the light does not solve the initial cause of the problem.
Replacing a number of parts trying to troubleshoot the problem in the hopes of getting the light to stay off is a tremendous waste of time and money.
The simplest, and most economical way to alleviate your issue, is to have an engine diagnostic done by a reputable shop to determine what caused the computer to signal you to begin with. Just reading the computer codes may not find the "cause".
That being said, if per-chance you feel the need to reset the light in the hopes that it was a "glitch" of some kind, you could disconnect the negative battery terminal for a couple of minutes to clear the check engine light.

The Service Engine Soon light is designed only for the purpose of notifying you that the car has a problem that affects its emissions output. It may run fine, but it has found a fault in its system.
You can clear this light by disconnecting the negative battery cable for 15 or so seconds, but if the fault is found again the light will come back. The only real way to get rid of it is to fix the problem or fool the computer (a tough feat).

You can't turn it out. You have to have it fixed. You may think it runs fine, but there is a problem. It could be as simple as a loose gas cap, or as serious as a slipping transmission.
You just don't know unless you read the code, and test the area the code leads you to suspect is at fault.

If the light is on, there is an error condition. Even if there is no apparent driveability issues, there is still something wrong. You need to have that code pulled to find out what is going on with the car.
Make sure that your gas cap is on good in tight. A loose cap can turn the light on (leak in the evaporative system).
