Darryl Stingley died today. The former New England Patriots receiver was 55, and no cause was immediately announced. He was paralyzed from a hit in an exhibition game by Oakland Raider safety Jack Tatum in 1978. He played five years with the Pats after playing at Purdue University, and before that at John Marshall High in Chicago. His death is already a top story on the Boston and Chicago newspaper websites. Does anyone remember seeing him play? How good was he?

I have provided a link to Stingley's career stats. He was not a spectacular NFL player, but was a solid and dependable receiver.

While his numbers pale in comparison to today's receivers, it should be mentioned that he played on a run-oriented team during a time when football was more run-oriented in general.

His death is a tragic loss; my prayers are with Darryl's family and friends at this time.

He was pretty good. His stats weren't that great if you compare them with wide receivers today. But it was a different era with a run dominated team. There are many that argue he was just starting to become an NFL star before the Tatum incident. Unfortunately, we'll never know.

Stingley and I went to the same Chicago high school but different years. He was a great high school player but didn't have great size. He attended Purdue and was drafted into the NFL, I believe, in the 3rd round. His NFL ability was average for a wide out of his size and speed. He best attribute was his positive attitude and his faith in his fellow team mates.

One thing when looking at olds passing stats to remember is the total yards will be down but YpC will be way up as more routes were longer.

Also remember these were the New England Patriots before they even had any limited success.

He was a good receiver on his way to being better than good until the Assasin hit him broke his neck and by the way it was a legal hit. I always thought Tatum got a bad rap for it but it was good hit. Stingley was a good receiver.

He was a good second receiver, solid player, not flashy but steady and fast. Too bad for this loss
