It depends. Walmart has a tendency to ask for the value of the things she shoplifted and then tack on a $250 fine.
It will be up to the court system on what they do whether she is placed on probation and fined or do jail time

Probably not. She'll have to pay the $73 even though she gave the items back, and probably do community service.

Anyone who steals through a self-checkout is a complete moron. Doesn't she see all the cameras pointed at them? Also, there are scales under the bags that alert security when items are placed in that haven't been scanned.

Its all up to Wal-Mart. Different stores have different policies for deciding whether or not to seek prosecution. If she shoplifted $74 worth, they probably will and she will be charged and arrested for theft. If this happens, she will only be in jail until she is able to post bail. She will most likely also be served a no-trespass notice and told she is not allowed to come back to Wal-Mart.

Your friend just made everything more expensive for the rest of us. I hope she gets the max, which I know won't be much having been a material witness to too many shoplifting cases. The best one though was when a soldier in our US Army was stupid enough to steal a $6.99 laminated map. He had the money, and, of course, was willing to pay after we caught him shoving it down his pants. My workplace liked to prosecute. His dumb butt ended up dishonorably discharged from the US Army for a $7 map. Total props to the US Army on that one.

I sure hope they lock her up. Don't you realize that every time some one shoplifts that it adds to the cost of the products for ALL of us? First offence, baloney - first time she got caught.... And from Wal-Mart, $73.00 worth is a lot of stuff.

No, this is a misdermenor offense. She may get a court date, but knowing our judicial system they will want her to plead, and most likely she will do some community service and maybe pay a fine of some sort.

I hope they do. If every person who walked into wall mart stolid 1-$1 dollar item they would loose $100.000.00 dollars a day from every store, and u would pay the difference. You don't think they are going to take the loss do you? They pass it on down to you and me.

Probably not for shoplifting. Fine and maybe some public service and probation.
