Well, when you consider that Lincoln used Regular Army to not only break up the Protests in NYC - but had them shoot them (over 1,000 protestors were either wounded, maimed or killed) -
or that he abolished the free press -
or that he used the liberation of the slaves as a ploy to get the North to finally get interested in a war they could care less about......
He sure had fortitude - I will give him that.

The most important characteristic that Lincoln dislpayed was restraint. When South Carolina, and then other states seceeded from the Union, There were many "war hawks" who wanted to immediately engage in war. Lincoln attempted to avoid a civil war by engaging in political dialogue. When that did not work, he was forced into fighting the Civil War because he believed it was not possible or premittable for states to seceed from the Union.
When the war was over, many people beileved that harsh punishment should be given to the South, for the rebellion and war that it caused. Lincoln's plan for Reconstruction was based upon restraint and forgiveness. This enabled the entire U.S. to put a lot of bad feelings behind, and recover quickly from the divisive war.
