If you wanted to see all of San Diego then a car would be your best bet. But if you only plan on SeaWorld, Downtown, and the Zoo then public transportation is not a bad option considering where you are staying. The trolley station in Old Town can take you downtown to the Padres stadium and Gaslamp Quarter. And it's only a short bus ride from the trolley downtown to the Zoo. You could even walk to the Zoo from the City College Trolley Station downtown if you wanted to, it's only like a mile to 1.5 miles.

There are two loop bus routes that run in the opposite direction from Old Town through Pacific and Mission Beach that goes by SeaWorld and most of the hotels in the area. It runs every 15 minutes and runs fairly late till around 12:30am. So if you are staying near these two routes then you probably do not need a car b/c the bus can take you to SeaWorld and to the trolley for trips downtown or anywhere else the trolley runs like through Mission Valley or down to Tijuana.

I would go to www.sdcommute.com and look up the 8/9 bus to see if it/s near your hotel. There is also a trip planner at the top left corner of the website where you can enter in the address of your hotel and your destination and the time you need to leave or arrive there by and it will tell you how get there using public transit. It's very easy to use and a very useful trip planning tool. If you are near the 8/9 or the 30 bus routes then you might want to consider just taking public transit instead of renting a car.

Public transit in SD isn't the best overal but it can easily be done depending on where you are and where you are going. And public transit in the area you will be staying and visiting is fairly good. Plenty of transit in downtown and good service to the Mission Bay/Mission Beach/Pacific Beach areas. You are staying and going to touristy areas so transit is better there than elsewhere in the county. The buses and trains are not that dirty or that bad either. If you have any questions feel free to ask, I'm very familiar with the transit system here.

Get a car! But also see if your hotel has a free shuttle or something which they might, so you only drive when necessary. You won't be traveling long distances or anything, but the transit system is not the best and will definitley eat up your timebecause of where you're staying. Just as a side note, it sounds like you should've been staying downtown-Petco, the zoo, and the gaslamp are all practically within walking distance of each other. Lots of nice beach and bay where you'll be though. You'll have some very nice scenery!

renting a car is your best best, buses are dirty and taxis are too expensive you can get a rental for $30 a day plus gas but at least your in your own environment and can control your stops , Just buy a thomas guide or map out where you want to go . Plus if you are doing something you thought would be fun you can leave if it's not...... If you want to you can go to the beach ,, I think san diego area beaches are the best. La Jolla is my favorite.

Yes, because there are no good buses or taxis in San Diego and everything is so spread apart. Definitely get a car!

yes, sandiego is gorgeous so you should definetely rent a car so you can see as much of the area as possible. if you do not rent a car do not catch cabs just ride the trolley or bus public transportation rocks there, though iwould definetly rent a car economy car just for the two of you. i am from there public transportation and cabs are somewhat costlyu and you eill benefit with your own personal transportation. have fun iam jealous as i am from there, but currently live in georgia.

get a car. The public transportation is not very good and it would take you a ridiculous amount of time to get anywhere.
