My flatmate leaves it all switched off, pulls out the plug for the TV. Drives me insane. Do you need to do this, does it save electricity?

Doesn't save electric, but could hinder a short circuit or electrical fire. We don't do it normally, but if we are going away for a few days or so we unplug everything just the same.

No you don't except in the case of living in an area very prone to thunderstorms. A nearby heit could cause a surge and fry your TV or computer but under normal circumstances, it does nothing.
