80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Haha, you started asking this nice question. Only few people do.
The meaning of life is to realize who is asking that question - from where this question is coming out - to realize who you are.
Few will ask, from that only few will get the answer, from that only few will come, and from that only few will realize.
At the time of jesus, only 12 people asked and came. During time of Buddha, even more people came.
In Sanskrit, there is a verse which says, after 1000 births a man will start seeking, and then, only after 1000 births he'll reach a realized master or a Guru who can really answer that question.
Ask this question sincerely, you'll be given the answer. "Ask, you shall find it"
Why don't you read the book 'The Alchemist', it'll be a nice starting point.

42, Oh wait, wrong question.
What is the meaning of life?
From a genetic standpoint, its to be born, to grow, then to pass on your genes to the next generation.
Philosophically, I'm not sure there really IS an answer.
Or that the answer is different for each of us. For those of a more warrior type mindset, it could be to join the military or martial arts or something. To a religious mindset, it might be to join the preisthood or missionary work.
The general answer is: to live your life as you see fit.

What is the meaning of life? - To fellowship with your Creator.
Fellowship was lost due to sin. The sin issue could not be dealt with by good works, traditions, or rituals. The wages of sin is death. A loophole was created by God that a substitute death could be used, hence the Levitical system of sacrifice, a picture of what was to come. God came down in the form of man, to live, and die in our place to re-establish our lost fellowship. This event tore the veil in the Temple to announce that the wall of separation between man and God was over. All we need do is come to Christ for the cleansing of sins and obtain the once-lost fellowship.
Why are we here? - For God to obtain a people, who by free will choice, choose Him without seeing Him. Who trust in Him when all the world trusts themselves.
