Why not give the choice to the landlord rather than try to change a culture from the top. All that will happen is that the small pubs will close down and the off liscence sales will climb - UNWORKABLE AND DUMB!

What happened to choice?
If you don't want smoke - go to a pub that CHOSE to ban smoking.
If you want to smoke go to a pub that CHOSE not too.

Goddamn Nazi's are ruining this country! Da,mn you all!

I reiterate: Choice; I know some of you may not want 2nd hand smoke - fine with me - go to a non smoking pub! We are all adults here - why should I not have the choice anymore- it's simple. All you nazi's should wait until they try to ban something you like - anyway - you would just passively agree anyway - that's the problem with this country - we all blindly agree with linear media focussed arguments! Please, see moderation - not totalitarian arguments - OUR CHOICES ARE ERODING AS YOU REPLY so think carefully about your words.

I am a none smoker, and very keen on fitness and i look after my body as best as i can, i have always respected smokers, i have a few friends who do smoke, I'll be honest i hate smoking because of what they do to the body and other people around you, but smoking is now becoming unacceptable in enclosed places, i love going out, like anyone else does but i don't have a choice, i would like to think that landlords would make a smoking facility within the pub somewhere where the whole pub is not affected by smoke then at least everyone can still enjoy going out and not have to completely divide us up, i also think that the government are really concerned at the amount of people affected by lung cancer i don't know what the figures are but i'm sure there quite high, final thought : do you care about other peoples health if so give a thumbs up, if not then thumbs down, because that is the bottom line of this debate other peoples health.

Because (at least in all my locals anyway) passive smoking kills. And all the non-smoking sections are TINY, tucked away in the corner, and you always have to walk through the smoking section to go anywhere - the bar, the toilet, the pool table, the fruit machines, even to enter and leave the pub! It makes everything about you stink, and if you have CHOSEN not to smoke, why should you smell like a 40-a-day smoker just because you want a drink in a pub????

I personally can't wait until they ban it - I am sick of drunken people flicking *** ash over everyone in sight because they are gesturing wildly. And it will mean an end to *** burns from the same people as well!!!!

ALSO, every smoker I have ever met tells me they want to give up, so they would clearly be without it too!
I'm amazed it hasn't happened before!

I ain't never heard of a smoking culture .I will tell you what will happen .we will not have to keep breathing in 2nd hand putrid offensive toxins .Why do smokers always put on the little boy hurt scenario I cant smoke here or there .If they really think it is not offensive then let them go and stand near a stinking garden fire they both smell the same .Are you sure that the small pubs will close .Why didn't you say you are smoking to keep the little pubs open yes I agree dumb is the operative word

I agree with you. It should be up to the owner. As for the Gov't banning smoking because it's not fair to the employees - Why are they treating us like children? I'm an adult. I know what the risks of 2nd hand smoke are - and if I am willing to work in an enviornement with 2nd hand smoke - that's my business. If it bothered me that much - I always have the choice to work elsewhere. Personally, 2nd hand smoke doesn't bother me. I don't smoke, but if someone else wants to - hey - they know the risks and it's their decision. Us non-smokers could always go to a non-smoke establishment if it bothers us that much. I think the gov't needs to stop banning everything and stop treating citizens like they are children! What's the point of being an adult if you can't make your own decisions? We go to school and are taught what is good for us, and we are fully capable of watching the news and doing research to find out how we can achieve optimum health. Let us decide how we want to live.

Yea in Canada people said the same thing about banning smoking - 'that it would never' business dropped a little at first and then a few months afterwards no one even noticed. Now in Canada I think people make jokes about when people were allowed to smoke in bars and pub. It almost like when people make jokes about 'rember when we were allowed to smoke at the office'

Look smoking has caused some problems but it is for others saftey. Yeah I think giving pubs the choice isn't a bad idea. But do you really want to deal with the pain in the asses that protest against smoking.

Your assumption is unfounded.

I am asthmatic and can't go to smoking pubs. They lose me and many others as customer by allowing smoking.

The law is there to protect people from the harmful smoke of other people. The landlord of a pub doesn't care if my health is harmed by coming to spend my money in his pub.

Why do you have a right to stand in a PUBLIC House and break your cancer causing smoke all over me?
What gives you the right to cause me cancer by secondary smoking?
Why do smokers believe they have the inalienable right to make my clothes stink of their smoke after I go into a PUBLIC house?
You may feel you have a right or freedom to smoke, so you do BUT I also have a right to breath air not polluted by your tobacco smoke, which is why you will soon have to step outside so I don't have to suffer.
Why should I have to pay more into the NHS for the treatment of people with self inflicted lung cancer?

Smokers are in the minority now, accept it and move on!

We had the same problem here in California in the late 90's.

It's the Anti-smoking lobby / culture who want to ban it EVERYWHERE... and STILL tax it !!

Interestingly... the small pubs / bars DID suffer short-term loss, but then folks adapted (outdoor smoking patios).

MY local found a loophole in the law: it was to "protect" waitresses / bartenders from second-hand smoke, so the law was worded such that if an establishment had "EMPLOYEES" they couldn't have smoking !! The owner made the staff partial owners and we get to SMOKE !!

I agree with no smoking in restaurants and libraries and such... but DAMN... a beer and a smoke GO together !!

Oh, and there is ABSOLUTELY NO SCIENTIFIC evidence that shows that second-hand smoke causes CANCER !! NONE !!

Good luck !!
