but no one really recycles their paper bags; so, what's better - paper or plastic? Should we use something else entirely?

A lot of people, myself included, bring cloth bags to the market to carry groceries home. Yes, you do have to buy them (or make them if you sew), but they'll last for years, you won't have bags breaking on you and you can get bags that go over the shoulder to make carrying easy. Many grocery stores sell them or you can get some great ones on eBay, where I got mine.

Frankly I'm tired of seeing plastic bags get caught up in trees blown by the wind when people dispose of them improperly and although they can be recycled, not that many cities are doing it, if any.

I have about a dozen canvas tote bags that I take to the grocery store every time I shop. I think I invested a whopping $15 for all of them.
I get some strange looks from people, but I look at it as my little part to help.

Did you know that the bags an average family of 4 gets every week has enough petroleum to power a car for 1 mile?

Then San Fran is way ahead of the curve. And let's bring back cloth diapers too.

Cloth! I think that is a great idea considering the plastic ones are a non -biodegradable pollutant in the environment.
