Good question. Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway.

I don't sit on a stand. I sit on a chair or bench or stool or something. Not a stand.

Originally they were just terraces, with handrails, for standing in.
Many places still have them.
Ironically they're called the 'cheap seats'.

I do know that Choirs and Bands use them while they perform. I am not sure where the name came from.
