When Captain Cook arrived, he reported that the locals called it "Owyhee," which has since been transformed into "Hawaii."

Hawaii is the name of the largest of the Hawaiian islands (also known as the Big Island) and is the name of the 50th State in the USA which is a collection of 8 islands – Hawai’i, Maui, Lana’i, Moloka’i, Koho’olawe, O’ahu, Kaua’i, and Ni'ihau. Many believe the name Hawai’i was adapted from the name Hawaiki, the name for a mythical homeland of all Polynesians. Others believe it is a variation of a South Pacific island Raiatea, which was called Havaii at the time of migration.

There is no agreement on how Hawaii got its name, but the islands may have been named by Hawaii Loa, their traditional discoverer.

The other possibility is that they may have been named after Hawaii or Hawaiki, the traditional home of the Polynesians.

Hawaii's nickname "The Aloha State" is simply after the Hawaiian word commonly used for hello and goodbye (amongst other things).

These lovely islands were discovered by the Polynesians, who gave them the name Hawaii. When Captain Cook discovered Hawaii, he renamed them The Sandwich Islands. This information was culled from From Mauka to Makai.
