I would start out with growing things indoor in a pots if you have not done this, do this first.
Internet and the library is a good place to start looking for the literature.
Have to make up your mind about what type of garden you will like, vegitable garden, fruits orchard or flower garden.
We had all three at one time to day we have just flowers and ornamental tree.

Here are a few basics:
Have good earth/soil/dirt to plant in.
Have good sunlight for the plants
Have a water source nearby to keep the plants in moisture
Be ready to work hard for a couple hours at a time digging or what ever. If you tire easily, you will need a different hobby.
Get a book/books for your region, that show planting dates and tips for good harvest.
Join a gardening club locally to get shared plants and good advice from other master gardeners.
And for the safety of our planet, please garden ORGANICALLY

I grew up with the magazine Home and Garden (my mom loved it), so when I started gardening, I looked it up on the Internet. They are my first choice for learning about gardening, in fact, they have a section about that. They also have everything from bugs (and how to get rid of them) to what to plant where and how to build water features, arrange your garden....I just can't tell you all that they have!! I'd recommend starting there and going on from there!! On HGTV, there is a guy (Paul James) who does "Gardening By The Yard". You can get there by clicking on:
