Why does religion matter?

Mitt Romney has to run against Rudy Guiliani, Newt Gingrich, and Fred Thompson. Yea, he won't get the presidency.

It seems like a big obstacle for the fundamentalist Christians to overlook, but I would not be opposed to such. Although the Mormon Church has a great deal of power and some would speculate that they would have a hold on the most powerful position in the world, I think the tenets of the Mormon Church stress a lot of things that most Americans value such as Family, Responsibility, Charity, etc. I'd like to see a Republican candidate without a lot of baggage and that stood for the actual Republican platform. After that, I don't care much about his religion.

Latest New Hampshire telephone poll shows Romney's support nearly doubles to 25% to tie McCain; Giuliani trails at 19%

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has rocketed to the top of the field of contenders for the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary crown, running dead even with Arizona Sen. John McCain at 25% each, a new Zogby International telephone poll shows. With Romney’s ascension, the GOP presidential race looks just like the Democratic contest – a three–way battle!

Probably have a better chance than an Atheist.

A Mormon perhaps one day, but not Mitt. He used to be liberal and I doubt the cons who know that, are likely to forget that.

And even though it's as respectable a denomination of christianity as all the others, the rest of christianity generally see it as a cult. Or so I've heard lately.

There may be someday, but it won't be Mitt Romney. It isn't his religion that dooms him, it's his pandering to the right to get support for running. This is a guy who less than three years ago was pro-choice, gay friendly and pro gun control. Now he's done a 180 on all three to try and suck in the evangelical and right wing conservative vote. It doesn't even matter if they buy it. If he gets the nomination the Democrats will tear him to pieces over being a flip-flopper, a term the Republicans invented themselves. Ironic huh? He'll be exposed as the opportunist that he is and it will really hurt him with moderates in particular.

There already has been. The current prophet has met with the president of the US many times. They probably met in the white house.

Anyways, there may be someone in office already in the white house... or maybe a security agent that is mormon, or maybe just a worker in there (i mean maintaince kinda of stuff...)

Anyone in the white can be mormon...its not like its publically displayed when anyone mormon does something.

"Mormon is flying to Europe for a vacation!" I dont normally see that in the news.

Mr. Romney raised more money in the first quarter of the year than Mr. Giuliani and Mr.McCain so there is a possibility. If he keeps rolling he may pass them. Look what Obama did for the Democrats. He nearly out raised even Hillary in the first quarter. This could be a very interesting election.

Bush and Romney are the main reasons I'll never vote Repulican again. On the issue of 'mormonism', it states emphatically that it is THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE church on the planet. All the others are false, and by insinuation, misleading, deceitful, satanic. Getting mormonism into public scrutiny will be the most damaging evidence agains the So-Called True Church, expose it's distorted history and prove it's claims are bogus. Mitt's okay, but the Morgbot church is terribly suspect.

Welll the press is going to have a job from hell to dig up dirt on him.

He is now running neck to neck with other GOP people running.

It will be a clearer choice between the clones of Obama/Hillary (There is no difference there)
or maybe someone in the back of the pack will break from the far left bringing the DNC back to normal.

If they do that it will be fair game.

I am sure when Romney goes face to face with Obama/Hillary it will be a GOP win.

Just like people where threatened by John Kennedy as a catholic, people are threatened by Mitt Romney as a Mormon. In both cases its a flawed idea. I think Romney would be great as President.
