...It will take a while for your screwed up metabolism to adjust.
A good balanced diet is a great help. A beer drinkers' system has adapted to use "empty calories" in diet due to alcohol being metabolized into sugar. I have gotten rid of the thick middle by moving toward a hypo-glycemic diet. This diet in general consists of a grazing diet of unrefined grains , lean protein, almost no sugar, consumed throughout the day. Been 16 years & I still find myself craving sugar ( at least not beer)
at times. The sugars & starches I consumed continued to support the fat belt around my middle. The belly didn't shrink until I adopted the diet. Lost 40 lbs ...now 200 lbs.

So are you doing any cardiovascular? Because the best thing about the beer gut is that it forms on top of the abs, so if you are doing ab exercises your abs are developing under the flab. What you need to do is either cardio so that you lose the fat first or instead of doing low reps with high wait, just do alot of weightless reps. You may also want to look into the pilates ab exercises because they are low impact and make a huge difference. I had a friend you had this same problem and you could poke him in belly and feel how hard they were underneath. He started running and it went away.

Lots of crunches. Touch your elbows to your knees. That means lifting up on your legs as well as your back.

how long did it take you to develop that beer gut? count on it taking at least that long to lose it.
