Wow, I love how everyone automatically assumes that the person asking a question is a pervert or something. Yes, it can be used to hide porn, which you may want to do let's say....if you have children!!
You do know that Internet privacy means a lot of things, like your ISP tracking everything you do for example. I do not want my ISP tracking me and bulding a profile of my suirfing habits, even if I am just surfing a .edu site or something. Also, file protection? I guess no one considered that.
All of these softwares, by the way, will turn over their records if you are using it for illegal activities.
I use these softwares because I may be looking at things I do not need anyone else to know about, such as my bank account info, or the engagement ring I am looking at for my girlfriend. Oh, I have to hide that I guess I am a pervert for not wanting my bank info visible to anyone who can turn on a computer.
Ultimately, it is up to the USER to decide. Obviously, if it is something illegal, well no software or people can hide you. I can go on all day, but I suppose I'd get carpal tunnel from this.

I think that Privacy especially on the internet is something that is essentual. But of course there are exceptions to every rule. I think anyone and everyone world wide who look up things like child porn or anything that hurts people or animals, or anything to do with terrorism and bomb making that is where I draw the line. But I also believe that with all the technology of today's world there is some kind of system that basically should "Ding" or "Pop" in the system when some one does searches or anything pertaining to that kind of a text. Let me also mention I used to be liberal (especially living in California my entire life) but recently I decided I would rather have my children and myself safe from harm and have some one occasionally looking over my shoulder rather then getting another 9/11 attack, because the cry babies want to blame some one else, rather then taking the steps to prevent it. The only people that care about hiding things and "Privacy" are individuals who have things to hide.

The only way you can get full protection is to have online and offline solutions to keep your net privacy. You can mask your IP but your a still collecting tons of incriminating data on your hard drive as a result. So, you still need to "secure delete" or "shred" The contents of your internet history. I here a good site that gives some info the subject

If you feel you have to hide then maybe you should not be browsing to those nasty places.
