It really depends on who is playing - not the instrument. Look at the harmonica - cool in the right hands (or mouth) - annoying when played by the average person.

I cheated, I looked at the answers already given. A interesting question. Everyone seems to think the Guitar is more cool than the Violin, so I will vote for the underdog. I love violin music. It is a more classic instrument, however many classics have been played on a guitar. The violin, is more difficult to play, and less forgiving if you make a mistake. I think the violin is "more cool" by virtue of it being a much harder instrument to learn.

I like violin because it it just classic and elegant.
However, i love guitar solos, sometimes, because they are just nice to hear.
