It is likely one of your wheel cylinders is leaking, or caliper. How often do you check fluids under the hood? If less than once a week, naughty naughty...

The brake light is on because the balance/transfer valve has shifted off center, that is a safety feature to allow you to still stop if one half the brakes fail due to leaks.

Just filling the master cylinder reservoir won't fix it, you need to find the leak and repair it. Then the system has to be bled in a certain sequence to re-center the transfer valve...

Don't drive it until it is repaired!!!

Your brake fluid reservoir is empty and sucking air.

There are two possibilities.

1) You have a leak in the brake system.

2) Your brakes are completely worn out.

your master cylinder or brake booster has gone out and you should not drive the car until it is fixed. these things happen sometimes, slight chance it is another issue like a blow out in the brake line but none the less a very serious matter.
