Exactly because it is a pagan fertility holilday. When you're trying to replace an old religion with a new one (and that's exactly what early Christians were trying to do), you need to retain some of the old customs, or nobody's ever going to change to your new religion. Why do you think Christmas is celebrated around the time of the winter solstice? Same reason.

Paganism is the basis for the Catholic religion. Catholicism was the first religion to kick off of Paganism for the Christian faith.. Most of the religious holidays are from the Pagan faith.

Paganism is a religion that worships God, Mother Earth, Gods & Goddess's, and is just as ritualistic as the Catholic Church, if not more so. They also worship the same Saints. Paganism is so misunderstood by most faiths but if they were to check into it they would be surprized at how much alike they are.

They were trying to introduce a new religion, it was much easier to take a holiday that has been celebrated for thousands of years, The Rebirth, and gradually introduce the new Christian beliefs.
Much of the Pagan still remains, the eggs, bunnies, baby chicks, etc.
The same thing was done in the Pagan Return of Light holiday, when the Christians turned it into the Nativity.
