It depends upon the age. Newer models simply have a pull-off spindle, which can economically be rewound with inexpensive trimmer line. Walmart carries the replacement line in their homa&garden section.

go to the website and type in the model and serial numbers for the brand they have a complete insructions there or turn and press in to unlock it may be jambed from use , an olde dude

Most I have seen have two points (one on each side) that you squeeze and either twist or pull and it comes off.
