He may very well just be cold. Check the temperature in the tank and warm it if it's under 74 F or so.

First of all, you should NEVER tap or hit the glass of a fish bowl or aquarium. This is like a sonic boom to the poor fish inside! The acoustic properties of water and the fish's sensitivity to vibration make this very stressful for the fish.
It is hard to say what is wrong with your Betta from here. He could be near the end of his lifespan. Most Bettas only live about 2-3 years though longer is possible with excellent care. When you say he is getting "grey" do you mean he is getting paler? Paleness could be a sign of stress or illness. Is he eating? Any swelling, white spots, fungus, fin rot? Is he building a bubble nest? (a male Betta who is building a nest will tend to stay near the nest.) Have you been keeping up with water changes? Have you tested the water lately ?(pH, ammonia, nitrite, especially) What is the temp of the water? (Bettas like warm temps close to 80 degrees even though most people keep them in unheated bowls)

try a mirror the freak out when they see anoher betta fish. Don't leave the mirror there long or he will wear him self out. They also breath air, so make sure he can get to the top of the water.

Justin it looks like you had better plan a funeral. Have you tried changing the water, cleaning bowl and trees etc. Are you pumping oxygen into bowl? If you have waited 2 weeks to seek help, how serious are you about fish? If you get another make sure the bowl is sterilized (hot H20)., and buy 2 fish--company could help. God Bless You Both.!!!

I had a beta that lived just over 3 yrs.
I also know that the more they move the more agitated they are. If he is quiet and still he represents being happy. Not sure about the grey tho.

Go to bettatalk.com go to the disease section then find out if your fish has one of the diseases and buy the medication at a pet store.
