The dryer is a year old, and is a maytag. We bought it as a scratch and dent so there is no owner's manual with it .

could be a few problems here to prevent heating.....1..the element is bad...2..the cycling switch is bad....3...the thermal safety limit blowed....4...the high temperature limit is bad....or you have lost one leg of your power to dryer...it is possible for motor to run if this happens..

It maybe the heating element that needs replacing. Contact Maytag and ask them to send you a copy of the owners manual look in the back of the dryer for the model number so you can get the right one.

All the previous answers assumed you have an electric dryer. If you have a gas dryer maybe the gas line is clogged (yes that does happen) or your flame sensor is shot (more common). Take off the front panel and watch, if you see a glow plug glow very brightly - the ignitor is OK. If the flame comes on and goes right out - the flame sensor is bad or dirty. Look for a tube that goes into the flame area and has a wire coming out of it. Gently clean it with emory cloth or very fine sandpaper and see if that helps. The advice about cleaning out the duct was also right on. That should be done on a yearly basis and you should only use metal ductwork, never plastic.

Is it putting out any heat at all? If it is then make sure the vent hose is cleaned out. A clogged one can decrease the heat and cause you to need to run the dryer through 2 or more cycles before clothes are dry. If there is no heat at all, the heating element has burned out, is a fairly easy fix if you are mechanically inclined.

Be sure that the lint trap is clean and if needed vaccummed out and/or brushed out. Second, make sure that the vent pipe is clean and not kinked. Third, maybe the heating element is faulty.
