Normally I am quiet, sullen and drawn inside. The only way that I ever feel sociable or able to engage in meaningful conversation with people is when I have a couple of drinks in me. Why?

Because when you drink it lowers your inhibitions. You can, however, learn to relate and talk to people without the drinks. I did and if I can do it anybody can, believe me. It's alright to be an introvert, there's nothing wrong with that ...it's who you are and your personality. To some people you may come across as the strong, silent type and that in itself can be intriguing to people. Be yourself and listen to the conversations around you. At some point, you will have something to add and will find yourself joining in on the conversation. Just remember that the more you drink, the less like your true self you become. At some you will come face to face with people without having those drinks, so why not try now. Just give it a try one night. Have a club soda or a ginger ale so it looks like you're drinking and see how you do. If you have a drink now and then for fun , that's one thing, but when you start to use it as a crutch and feel like you can't be yourself without it....it may turn into a problem. Good luck, be yourself and enjoy.

Alcohol is a depressant and it sometimes help people feel more social and less inhibited. No more Chris Farley like "STUIPID!" after you speak. You are probably anintroverted person by nature and in Western society extroverted people are more accepted and are seen as more confident, but the sooner you accept your true nature the better. It is not a bad thing to be shy. Also have you thought about the people you are trying to talk with? Are they friends that you actually have any similar interests with? Sometimes when you seem to be the problem, it is not the case...maybe they are just not your type. Be careful with self medicating because you always want to be YOU and not you on alcohol or pills or whatever.
