Maybe it has to do with a memory issue, I don't know about that.
I have a Cingular, it gives me a number but no name. However, I can put in several names in my contacts. When one of my contacts calls then I get the name. It may be designed that way to help you figure out if you want to take the call or not. Many times if it is not one of my contacts I won't answer. I figure if it is important they can leave a message. If not, then I'm not wasting my time or my minutes.

Verizon is one of those cell phone companies that never provides the name with the number on your caller ID.

So that way the you can put whatever you like to pop on the screen when someone calls. For instance if your best friend named Brain calls but on a person level you nick name him BIg B, you can have Big B show up intead of his First and Last name. Basically you can save whatever name you want to any number. But personally I think it would be nice to have their name automatically show up.
