Now ask Deanna how many books she has actually SOLD.
URG. Unless you have a lot of knowledge about the industry, don't self publish. Self-publishing is not considered a real "credit" that you can use for your credentials, and if you try to use a self-publishing credit as such real publishers will laugh at you. Bookstores won't carry your book. Reviewers won't review it. People will generally think you are a hack that can't get a real contract.
POD services like Lulu are great if you already have a strong business acumen and the resources to promote and produce your own book. Our small press actually uses Lulu to print our books. BUT, we invest in our books. We spent $3,000 just on marketing last year. Do you have $3,000 to invest in self-publishing? Do you have money to pay copy editors, proofreaders, sales reps, and cover art illustrators? Do you have money to pay for comp promotional copies to send to potential distributors? Do you have money to attend conventions to plug your book?
OK, I think I made my point.
Anyway, you should get a few copies of Writer's Digest, The Writer, Poets & Writers and other publications and read up on the industry. These magazines also list potential markets. These listings will tell you who is looking for what, how much they pay, and how to submit. I suggest you start there.

I would recommend self-publishing. I self-published a book of poetry through http://www.lulu.com/ (you don’t need an agent for self-publishing)
Lulu is completely free and very easy to use. You can then buy a global distribution, or ISBN, which will put your book on Barnes and noble, borders, Amazon.... I really like lulu, I think they are great. They also offer a great customer service if you get stuck. Once published with them, you automatically get the copyright, and you keep all rights to it. You can have books printed in b/w or colour, hardback or soft back, and in a variety of sizes.
If you think they are too good to be true (which was my original opinion) you can view my book at http://www.lulu.com/dchooper
Hope this helps. Good luck with your writing.
For any more information about Lulu you can contact me at forensic_dreamer@hotmail.com (if you do contact me, put Lulu in the subject line, or I might report as Spam)
Cheers, Deanna.

Get a copy of Writers Market. This will tell you who is publishing what and how they want it submitted.
You will need to finish your manuscript first, check it for errors in spelling and grammar and get it in the proper format for submission.
