The difference is that the immediate and extended family of the excavated aren't alive to be hurt by the idea of their relatives remains being disturbed.

However, in actuality, they are both the same. Archaeologists are also doing the thieving for the sake of science, but not without capitalizing financially when possible. Theft is theft, at least we learn something from the scientists, besides the fact we already know, that people are greedy.

Both do it because they make money by it. Archaeologists tend to document their discoveries and try not to wreck things more than they have to. Grave robbers don't, but fundamentally both do the exact same thing, only the justification and processes vary.

There is much debate about this subject in the field of Anthropology. Usually Archaelogists try to share their findings with the rest of the world. And yes, sometimes they recieve monetary gains. Archaeologists will also display their findings in museums, or study them and share their findings. However, "grave robbers" normally destroy the areas that they are digging and if the artifacts are ever recovered, they are normally destroyed because of improper digging techniques. At the same time, some people believe any Archaeology to be grave robbing because they are digging up, literally, a grave. I guess it kind of depends on your belief system about the dead.

Grave robbers are thieves and exploit the graves. They don't care who they hurt by this. Archaeologists contribute to history by finding artifacts that can tell us something about our past. And they don't keep the things they find.
