Yes they go back to original typewriters. They were originally positioned differently so typists could type faster. This however caused the hammers that put the letters on the paper to get all jammed up. So they implemented the current qwerty keyboard to optimize speed of typing and less jamming. Its obsolete now but the standard exists because thats the way everybody learned. There is an alternative though, called the dvorak keyboard, this is the fastest standard keyboard but it would require you to completely re-learn out to touch type.

The QWERTY keyboard layout was designed for one reason: to slow down typists. Early typewriters had keys attached to long arms that swung out to hammer their print on the paper. If too many keys were pushed too fast, the arms didn't have time to retract and they jammed. So, the keyboard was set up to be sure the arms came up slowly.

If they were positioned in alphabetical order, your fingers would be getting tangled all the time! They are designed to make the fingers work in a spiders legs fashion.
Very Very good question! I never heard this being asked before.

Yes the keys in the middle are j,k,f,d, are the keys that are used the most on the key board. If you practise, then you will not even beable to think where the keys are. you will just know. your brain will work with your fingers and just works.
