Latent heat is just a more general term; it refers to the heat lost or gained when a substance experiences a phase change. The latent heat of fusion (or melting) is specifically the latent heat of the liquid-solid phase change. The latent heat of vaporization (or condensation) is the latent heat of the liquid-vapor phase change.

Latent heat can refer to the: -

1. Addition of LH..Latent Heat of Fusion (melting ), or Vaporisation, (changing to vapour or gas).

2. Removal of LH .Latent Heat of Freezing (solidification) or Condensation (liquefaction ..changing to liquid).

In all of these operations, only a Change of State takes place ..there is no change in Temperature.

Different substances have different Latent & Specific Heat capacities.
