Depends where if there are parenthesis or not. They way you have it written -2^2 = -4, (-2)^2 =4.

It depends on if there are parenthesis around the -2.

-(2)^2 = -4
(-2)^2 = 4

-2^2 = -4 still because of the order of operations (Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction; aka "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally")

It depends whether the -2 is in parentheses or not. If it is in parentheses, the answer is 4. If it isn't in parentheses, the answer is -4.
