I don't think there is ANYONE in FAVOR of ILLEGAL immigration yet NOTHING is being done about it?

Do you think it will be a major campaign issue or not?

now THAT is a good question :) and the answer is yes! neither party supports Illegal immigration.. but they do have a different idea on how to go about fixing the problem.. but they aren't that far apart.. and many from both sides of the isle share views on this issue... this one could be worked out in a reasonable time... but they are too caught up with other issues right now and aren't giving it the thought it deserves.... with it being so split it won't be an issue when it comes to voting for a party... but it will most likely be an issue when voting for the person.

I think it will be a campaign issue, as I expect conservatives to take an imprison and ship 'em out approach, while liberals will take a stop them from getting in and get everyone who is here legal, working and paying taxes approach. But yeah, everyone wants it to stop.

(Of course Bush himself has a plan closer to what I called the liberal plan. I think a lot of conservatives disagree with him on that issue.)

The reason I think nothing is being done is the time spent worrying about Iraq, and some other Dem v. Rep political distractions.

I also think that if the way welfare programs and free government money gets distributed changes, you'll solve a lot of the problems. And they definitely need to fix some things in the system itself--I know of two Canadians trying to get green cards, and the hoops they have to jump through to get permanent residency are outrageous--I can completely understand why immigrants give up on doing it right and stay illegal.

I don't think it will be a major campaign issue.

I do think border control and immigration laws are necessary and should be enforced, and there will be a lot of hoo-rah about it, but little will change, because neither side really wants it to change, except for increased security in keeping terrorists out.

If I remember right, some or all of the Sep 11 terrorists were in the USA legally.

You must not have hear of a tiny WALL they plan to build...

Every country has their right to immigration control. BUT, the US has a BAD history in regards to foreing relations with its neighboring country down South, and ANY historian will tell you that.

One thing for sure, immigration policy DEFINITELY calls for reform.

I still find it amusing how "ILLEGAL" IMMIGRANTS were hired to build the wall between Mexico and the US.... lol... how ironic, huh?

PS: Immigrations has has existed here far before the start of the history of the US and it still goes on today. Sorry to inform you, "illegal immigration" will always exist : (

I confess, I haven't studied or focused on the issue lately, but my gut feeling is that, like a certain, popular "herb," it's more a matter of supply and demand, with the emphasis on "demand." It's simple economics, dearie. A lot of people want dirt cheap labor, and I'm just guessing that the majority of people who would employ illegals are more REPUBLICAN than Democrat.

We're talking about people who don't have any big issues with "outsourcing" jobs to Mexico or India; people who put Americans OUT of a job in the interest of profit.

Let me give you a couple of "real world" examples with which I'm intimately familiar:

The manufacture of two of the BIGGEST SELLING, name brand musical instruments was moved to Mexico, because of cheap labor.

These instruments retailed at well over $1200 each and had a history of setting the standard in their market niche.

All of a sudden, the QUALITY of those instruments began to decline, but....not the PRICE!

Get the picture, dearie? Let me draw it out with sidewalk chalk for you.

Quality > down, Price = unchanged, Profit < way up!

Well, the buyers of these products could not be deceived, so as a result, the sales figures began to DECLINE! No big surprise, there.

Bottom line: the manufacturing was moved BACK to the USA!

So, "outsourcing" is not all it's cracked-up to be, is it?

Hey, have you had to make any tech-support calls lately? Had any trouble understanding someone with a heavy mid-east accent? Or is it just me?

Anyway, dearie...I haven't picked any lettuce lately. Maybe you and I should work on our tans and go help the illegals bring in the latest crop of iceberg lettuce. Wadaya think?

It should be THE NUMBER ONE CAMPAIGN ISSUE! And as a proud conservative Republican, I say with a sigh, that I wish our President would be so flippin' tough on border control! As to why nothing is being done, well that's easy...liberals have way too much fun bashing the current administration to get ANYTHING done, and heck...since they believe that they have the '08 election "in the bag" why not stall all current efforts and then champion the issue themselves?

Not true. Some Hispanic organization are in favor of unlimited immigration from Mexico. Dems see the immigrants as likely Dem voters. Some Republicans (fiscal) see them as a source of cheap labor.

Dems want the ones who came here for handouts to be able to vote because they'll vote Dem.

Dems also like the fact that 8 million desperately poor people have come over the border since 2000 - that's the only reason the total number of poor people is up by 2.5 million and they think they can use that increase in poor people to argue that Bush's economic policies cause people to BECOME poor.

NO

Since Americans are to lazy to work. Illegals are our best hope of reinvigorating the industrial economic base in America.

With no jobs for the Illegals Government will be forced to offer tax breaks to industry to create jobs for the new workers.

The Government loves Illegals they pay taxes to a phony SS number but do not file for a return. It's free cash for the US Treasury.

Go big Red Go

No ----- but it should be. As long as Canada's immigrant ethnic population in our large cities has great control (i.e. they tend to vote "en bloc") over the agenda's of all our political parties this will continue to be a non-issue. For many of these people using illegal methods and cheating generally is a way of life ----- we are importing people with a culture of crime.
