Don't you wish that instead of dragging each other into the mud that a party would stand up and raise the bar so to speak? That they would strive to improve themselves instead of trying to make the other guys look bad? Just once I'd like to see someone from a party stand up and say.. yup, we screwed up on that one.. but we'll do better.

As a friend and acquaintance of many gov't workers let me tell you. They all talk about CYA. Everytihng in Washington is about self and covering your own butt. Everything that goes wrong is someone's fault, and they are trained to make sure that they aren't that person. I know Bush has never stated that he was wrong about anything. But at the same time, if he did, people would use it against him. I wish people would just talk about what they will do not what the other person did/didn't do. You get a star for that question.

I'd like to believe that the average American is tired of the status quo in the political community.

Sadly, some people in power in both major and a few of the minor political parties are addicted to a mindset that promotes drama as the only means of engagement.

The theory is that if they are not promoting their beliefs in direct competition to those of the opposing parties, they are failing to make their point.

The worst of this thinking includes zero-sum logic that prevents meaningful and logical discussion of issues. It's an 'us or them' game that is only won if their candidate or law wins.

I have little hope that this situation is going to change anytime soon.

This has been a bone of contention for me for quite some time. I'm tired of the ills of one party being defended by the fact that the other got away with it. No one seems to want to set a higher bar any more. They're satisfied with being just as good as the people they oppose. It's annoying, it's childish and if it doesn't stop, the quality of the politicians in this country is just going to sink and sink and sink until we can no longer hold our heads up high and claim that "America" means anything. And WE (Democrats AND Republicans AND all other parties in between) are letting it happen. If this country fails, it isn't Bush's fault, it isn't Clinton's fault... it's OUR fault.

It's not the only profession where guys get caught cheating. It's the most publicly visible one though. And the reason it's given more press is due to the fact that these people are elected as leaders. As such, they ought to have a strong moral compass to guide them in making decisions that are right for the people they are supposed to represent. When they make choices that show how corruptable they are, it establishes that they do not always make the right choices and introduces doubt over their ability to make the right choices in the future.

As most people on here are not politicians they can only blame one side or the other for all the ills of society .
They have dug in behind a set of beliefs that do not allow them to think and thus we have sides to choose and defend from our own choices .
Its is impossible to govern any group which is under a form of mind control . That this control often radically shifts direction over the course of twenty years which in political time is nothing .
By the time politicians develop the ability to morph into what the people want they have changed again .
The fundamental issues that divide political parties boil down to several issue which government tries to juggle .

#1 is religion and it encompasses abortion , as well as spilling over into education .
#2 is the death penalty which also is a deceleration for strict and longterm prison sentences for people who violate the law .
#3 legislation designed to create equality for americans . This goes to minimum wages , tax structures , hiring and firing practices , laws to protect workers .

Since no one agrees on any of these things or how to address them properly all you can do is defend your ideology .
If you are pro life -pro death penalty -and limited government you tend to be republican

If you are prochoice - anti death penalty -and want gun control you are a democrat .

This would not bother me so much if it did not leave us without representation .
Because all politicians do today is bring home the bacon to their districts while know one is paying attention and placing all americans so far in debt that if we pay it off today every man woman and child needs to cut a check for $27,000. Dollars .
Now I do not know about you but if I was just born today thats a hell of a thing to pass on to me .

Thank you Pip! I agree completely...

I think this is a subject where it looks like there is a general consensus because you can't tell the political beliefs of many of your answerer's!

Good managers re accountable not only for their actions, but the actions of their subordinates, and this unwritten rule also applies to politics.

Inevitably, despite our differences in faith, politics, race, socio-economic status or other background, it is important to remember that we are Americans, and with that, we should be working together towards uplifting our great nation.

I would love to see it, but look at these posts here as an example. The American public welcomes it and creates it among themselves (just look at the Hillary Clinton has a penis posts). I think it almost a current cultural value to expect controversy. We have this expectation that our politicians be saints. Everyone is fallible.

Sick of Teflon politics, are you?
The only way to eliminate that is to devise a system that eliminates career politicians. Term limits in the senate might help. Raising the minimum age to 62 in the house of representatives might help.

It just goes to show that each are too hard-headed or too proud to admit that their political side has made mistakes. Easier to point the finger at the other guy than admit their own fault(s).

You have identified one of the cores of conservatism. Attack the people presenting the evidence before it can weaken the father figure. Just listen to how many times someones rants about a person rather then a issue.
