If you mean

|x + 5| = 2

then that's an absolute value problem. Remember that an absolute value means that the sign is dropped, so that the answer is always a positive number. For this one, x + 5 = 2 or x + 5 = -2, so you have to solve two equations and end up with two answers:

x + 5 = 2
x = -3

x + 5 = -2
x = -7

When you plug in either of these into your original equation, you get 2 - the absolute value signs remove the negative sign from your expression:

|x + 5| = 2, plug in x = -7
|-7 + 5| = |-2| = 2

It sounds like you have an absolute value problem.

Is this how it looks in the original? | x + 5 | = 2? (FYI the "pipe" is over the enter key on most keyboards, the same key as the \. The "pipe" requires the shift key.)

So the equations become
X + 5 = 2 and
X + 5 = -2.

X + 5 = 2 subtract 5 from each side, getting X = -3
X + 5 = -2 subtract 5 from each side, getting X = -7

So your answers are {-3, -7}.
