Swim on top of the water not underneath. With every armpull lift your head out of the water and as you take your arms forward and kick your legs put your head in again. Do this on EVERY armpull. Make sure you glide after you have put your head in. I am sure you must know the gliding position?
These are the stages of breastroke:
Pull with your arms and as your arms reach your chest lift your head out of the water.
As you stretch your arms forward put your head back in the water and kick your legs (kick: bend your knees in, stretch your legs out in a scissor shape then snap together. just remember frog, scissors, pencil!)
Hold your arms forward as you snap your legs together so you end up in a streamlined position.
Hold this for around 2 secs.
Take this advice from me. I am a breastroker. I am 36th in England for 50m breastroke 14 yrs age group.

Your head should be looking down to the bottom of the pool as you scull your hands outward for the pull. Pull back and in to pop your head and shoulders out of the water but go smoothly into the recovery, gliding a little as your head settles back in underwater.
Try doing it with hand paddles to get more power, but leave the wrist strap off to make sure you are pulling correctly. If you are pulling correctly, you don't even need the finger strap--the pressure of the water against your had will keep the paddle pinned in place at every point of the pull and recovery.

Hey girl, I admire your enthusiasm. Breastroke is not easy until you get the rhythm, then you find yourself asking, "why couldn't I just do this in the first place?!" so don't fear, you are not alone!
It doensn't sound like you're going to be competing anytime soon so you won't have to be troubled with legality and all that stuff. For now, let me see if I can help with basic technique!
The Kick
One thing to always remember about your kick is to think frog: UP, OUT, TOGETHER. Practice the kick by itself with a board or while you swim with crawl arms or even better, do it underwater. Swimming breast kick under water will help you a LOT! Legs go like this: bend knees, point toes outward with feet at 90 degree angle to ankles (like walking) as they come up to your butt. When they get as far up as they can go, open your feet and make a circle until the touch again (think frog!). When they touch you can glide with the kick and use the momentum you just created. Repeat this in a rythmic pattern as you swim around and practice how it feels.
The Pull
Imagine hearts or keyholes, this visual shape will help your arms make a clean, symmetrical path. Start with palms together in front of your face (praying, I call it!) arms extend forward with hands together until they are as extended as you can get them. Open your palms to the sides and continue UP and around until your hands come together again at your belly button. Return to "prayer" position in front of your face and repeat.
The Rhythm
The best description would be to imagine that your arms are at your sides and someone had tied a rop from each wrist to it's respective ankle (right to right, left to left). The ropes are taunt so that if you raise your left arm, the left leg comes up too. Think of this while you swim breast to help with the rhythm. When you snap your legs together you should be pulling your hands through the most powerful part of your stroke as well. When the hands meet in front of your belly button, your legs will be fully extended and you should be able to glide on the momentum.
The Head
Your face should be forward, following your hands in and out of the water. When your head comes up to breathe, tilt it forward slightly upon re-entry so you are looking down and out as your stroke extends.
I hope this helps, if not here's a How-To from Wikipedia:

Make sure, you're not going to deep, or else your stroke can be ilegal, or wrong! Also keep your head like it's atttached tsright to your shoulders, don't use your neck, like your a turtle lol, when starting, I always said to myself, up, out, and together! It really works, and pull with all your strength! LOL hope this helps! Good luck!
