I went to Vegas in May two years ago. We stayed at the Stardust because they were tearing it down and we wanted to stay there before it was no more. Alright room nothing to scream about. I didnt' really sleep anyways, I think I spent a couple hours in my room tops and that was to catch a few zzz and have a shower and get ready. There are extrordinary hotels in Vegas. My favorite was the MGM Grand hot hot hot
and the Venetian has this ceiling that you have to check out. 5 days if gonna feel like 2 so much 2 do so little time check out the Pirate show right on the strip pretty neat and its free too. I wanted to check out the Electric graveyard that is suppossed to be amazing never got the chance though.
As long as you have a great time who really cares where you stay. The strip is hotel haven so take your pick.

Have fun

I will be in Las Vegas during the same time, but for a little longer. If you have to stay on the strip, The Flamingo, Harrah's, Bally's, Luxor, MGM, New York-New York, Mirage, TI. On the more expensive side, Caesars, The Venetian, The Bellagio, The Wynn. Off the strip try The Palms, The Rio. Have a wonderful time, whatever you do! My first trip to Vegas was almost 15 years ago, and I remember it like yesterday. I stayed at the Luxor and I lost a grand total of $120.00 during 5 nights! Now, $120.00 may last me two hours...just as the Las Vegas Strip as changed, so has my gambling budget! Before you go, check out www.tripadvisor.com. That gives great real reviews of hotels. Enjoy!

If you want to stay high end, try:
The Venetian
The Wynn
Mirage
Bellagio
Mandalay Bay
Paris

If you want to stay cheap, try:
Imperial Palace (great location, cheap room)
The Tropicana (good value for the $$, they are running specials now)
Circus Circus (too cheesy for my taste, but a lot of people do like it)

The best deals will be found Downtown. Try to stay near Fremont St, like at:
Fitzgeralds
Binions
4 Queens

Some of the better themed hotels are:
MGM Grand
Luxor
Alladin/Planet Hollywood (I believe the renovations are done)
New York New York
Rio

It is impossible to say where to stay. Do you want to have a nice room in a nice resort? Will you be spending most of your time on the Strip? With it being your first time, I would suggest staying on the strip and paying a little extra for a decent room. If you are not sure what to expect, doing this might be a safer bet.

I would suggest visiting http://www.ratelasvegas.com/hotels. Or even talk to a travel agent.

My two favourite hotels are the Stratosphere and Orleans. The benefit of the Stratosphere is that I can get downtown without having to fight the traffic on the strip, which at night time especially, can be like London rush hour. The Orleans is off the strip, but with a car, easy to get to, and you quickly learn to drive the back streets to get to it.

Both these hotels are modestly priced too.
