Check the Options or Preferences of the individual items. Many will have an option to show or hide the item in the System Tray. Right-click each item and go to Options, Preferences or Setting (whatever). You may have to open the application to access these settings.
Win XP can hide them for you. Right-click the taskbar at the bottom of the screen and choose Properties. Chech the "Hide inactive icons" option and click OK.
Some of these things should be running all the time, like anti-virus, etc. so don't disable them. Others might be in the Windows Startup folder. Eliminate them from Startup and they won't auto start. Stuff like Quicktime or Yahoo Messenger, you'll need to dig into the Options menus. Video card settings, you may have to go the Display Settings in your Control Panel and uncheck the 'show in taskbar' option.

On the Start Menu, click on Run and type in "msconfig", without the quotes. Click on the startup tab and uncheck everything. Apply the changes and restart the machine.

You THINK it takes up memory? Some of these are needed to make programs run properly. CHeck each one before disabling it in MSconfig.

You can either manually right click and exit them, or using Windows Defender, define the startup programs which you would like to launch on startup or inactivate them from the startup menu. goodluck!

Go here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilitiesindex.mspx
and check out autoruns. This program will show you what programs autostart when you boot your computer. It also lets you change them to not autostart. Use with care, though. You don't want t stop something from starting that you need.
