The problem with our International Relations is that there are too many schools of thought on the underlying principle.

What you seem to be saying is that our being the strongest requires us to behave as if we are the weakest. That makes no sense whatsoever, but is commonly enough held that I'm sure you think it is logical.

Another approach is that, being the strongest, it is our duty to be the world's policeman or referee. We can't do that for the entire world alone, and there are precious few other nations on earth that have any interest in participating in that project.

Another approach is that we should do nothing in the world anywhere. This is fine up to a point, but eventually the activities of other countries has such a detrimental impact that we are forced to do something, whether it is pay some form of ransom or do something destructive.

The best approach to foreign policy in my view is to do what is in the best interest of the United States. Naturally the problem with this is that different people will have different opinions about what that requires in terms of relations with specific foreign powers, so it is important that we have unity of command when it comes to foreign policy, and not have individuals like Joseph Wilson or Nancy Pelosi off pursuing their own agendas.

Our most serious problem in foreign policy is that our State Department has not had the correct understanding of their mission in over 100 years. The best way to move forward would be to fire every last one of them, and re-hire those willing to see their role as representing the interests of the United States to foreign governments, rather than representing the interest of a foreign government to the United States.

I feel that we should pull our military out of every country that protest us being there. Place a base on the Mexican border with the money that would be saved. (For border protection.) Then explain to countries that if they support an aggressor or try to harm any or our citizens then we will level their country and kill who ever was in charge. There now we are not being accused of forcing our views on anyone. We will just strike back 10 fold once provoked. Let the other countries deal with the headaches. Then other countries would know we would not bother them or press them for becoming a democratic state. Yet, give them the assurance they will be flattened if they come after America. Great foriegn policy. Also stop spending billions on other countries and utilize the monies here at home. I bet it would not take long for the world to stop and wonder who will help them now.

Does that mean that we have to abandon the poor and oppressed around the world? Your statement indicates a certain magpie reliance on election year jargon and slogans. The actual government runs on a bipartison basis and even the war in Iraq was the product of a Dem controlled Congress voting for the war. The State Department is made up of professional statesmen. There is no little gang of people who run things, thats just baloney from the next group who wants to try to be the little gang who runs things. Its not that simple. I think to be known as a nation that talks about freedom and helping others and then to not be able to sustain relief efforts or even a military mission is worse for America's image. Negative views of us will never stop as there are people who embrace negativity as a way of life. We saw that in the Tsunami relief efforts when we were criticized but then when the facts were shown by us it was clear to everyone that we were doing the heavy lifting in that. We intervened in Kosovo and stopped genocide in that country at the cost of some of our own soldiers lives and we are still there, helping to protect the Muslim population (ironic isn't it?). You can find, and I am sure you like, to hear foreign activists berate the US (negative sells well overseas too) and you seem to be one of those who is always wanting to apologize to people who deserve no apology. So long as the US continues to pour billions into poor countries and keeps genocidal regimes wondering if the US will stop them from mass murder and invasion of weaker nations, the US will hold a certain role on the world stage that is important to all. The US does not occupy nations, note Japan and Germany who were rebuilt by the US after murderous regimes were deposed, and Vietnam is now a key trade partner. You must think that you are supposed to bow and scrape and that is not what the huddled masses of the world want to see. I think you are not well informed about the US role in world relief efforts, the importance of the US being a fair trading partner, about exporting technology, education and aid and serving as a safe haven for those who deserve to live a free life our future is secure. Trying to kiss everyone's butt in the world, regardless of their motives, is not image building and not important to America's future. Staying true to our values is.
