How hard is an American soldier to identify? They're IN UNIFORM. So if you're another American soldier or an ally... DON'T SHOOT THEM. Is that really hard????

LOL - I love all the "it's okay, stuff happens" answers. Tell that to their families.

I am. Luckily in WW 2 there were almost no stories like that... Thank goodness, it would have hurt morale. It probably happened, but the media was more responsible back then

Let's use the Pat Tillman case as a study.

His groop game under fire from the enemy. He volunteered to scout out an advanced position at a higher point to achieve a better firing angle on the enemy. A second group passing through the same area heard gunfire from Tillman's position, didn't know that he was up there, and returned fire. Pat Tillman was killed by this fire.

War is confusing. The days of straight lines in different uniforms marching toward one another on big, open, battlefields is long over. Mistakes happen and people get killed. That's why war kind of sucks and should only be used if there is NO OTHER CHOICE.

You can't blaim the troops for these incidents, though. They have a split second to receive, interpret, and analyze an hour's worth of information. All the training in the world cannot make that happen perfectly every time.

I know you're sick of hearing this but bear with me a minute. This has happened in ALL wars.No it's not right and no it shouldn't happen. When we fought the Viet Nam War it happened a lot.The soldiers were scattered all across the country side sometimes with communications that were down and planes would come in and drop bombs. My own son,in Iraq almost got hit by friendly fire. They were attacked and everyone had to scatter for cover. He jumped up and began to run, zig zagging as taught,he zigged when he should have zagged and got a bullet through his sleeve. He wasn't hurt thank God but the guy who had shot was very upset more so than my son who understood how it happened. It DOES just happen.Until any of us Couch Warriors have been in that situation it is really hard to understand. And BTW I am not a Bush fan and neither is my son.But this is a fact of life in the military.

Death comes in a blink of an eye in combat. As I was told in infantry school "There are two types of infantry soldiers; the quick and the dead!"
Friendly-fire just proves how ineffective the terrorists are in fighting the US. It is only our own side that can kill US troops.

Okay, so now you are a military expert, as well.

And you have also missed the point of this whole issue. The criticism of the President about this matter, was that Liberals believed he should have known that friendly fire killed this person, and informed his family of that fact sooner. As usual, the Liberals criticizing our President for not being a shrewder and slicker attorney.

Their families are grieving the same as if their child had been killed by the enemy, because it amounts to the same thing--the loss of their child. And these brave people are not political fodder for your Bush-bashing.

I think you should venture over there and find out for yourself, be sure and let all your "friendly" neighborhood troops read all your posts though. I think we should collectively find a way to Shanghai you, I wish they still did that, especially in your case - mmmmmm, nice. Sorry, I was just imagining something.

Well, I have never been in the tense situations our soldier encounter in Iraq. I cannot answer this question with any experience. I think you have to live their life to know how hard these situations can be.

No, I would like to hear more. They hilight the situation in Iraq and how this Administration has bungled the whole thing. I would like to see TV show more flag draped coffins too. The wussy press has done Duby's bidding by not showing the truth and all of the truth.

If you're in a helicopter looking through FLIR goggles, its hard to tell an American from an insurgent.

This is a terrible, 360 degree, 24/7 war. The fact that there are so many friendly fire deaths is just one more reason to end this war now.
