This is a good question.....To the other answerers, of course they have a short life span, but obviously they don't go extinct. They're back when the weather is warmer.. Where do the dead flies' decendants go that are still around?

Idont where they go to die but i know how they they breed.
if you hang some meat up in the summer( liver is best).
after a week or two maggots will start falling brilliant bait for fishing (happy angling)

they do a whole bunch of things depending on the type of insect.
Some migrate - Like Monarch butterflies
Some actually do hibernate - Lady bugs wasps etc.
Others survive in Larval and Pupal stages emerging as adults in spring. I think this is the case for flies.
Apparenly some of them change the water in their bodies into glycerol which functions like anti-freeze.

they go to my window sill lay eggs then die !
I get all the babies then, no matter how many times I clean the windows the little sods still hang in there
