I appreciate you guys helping me with my questions. Today has been a sh*tty day for my fish. I just bought 3 more chromis from petco, making this 5. When I woke up two of them were dead, and they looked to have been beaten up by the other 3 chromis. I'm so pissed off right now I don't know what to do. I was going to keep 5 chromis and 2 clowns. Now I dont know what I want to do. I am still going to get just 2 clowns, but I think I'm gonna stick with the 3 chromis instead of getting anymore. Now, I'm looking to add a hawkfish, blenny, or goby to the mix. So my question is what other fish should i get? I'm keeping 3 chromis, 2 clowns and I want two more, different fish. Any suggestions?

Johnathan,

When you moved your tank, how did you move it? Your fish could have died, then the other picked at it.

DO not get your clowns yet. Have you retested your water? When you moved the tank, how did you move it? It is possible you need to restart the cycle process depending on the move. Stop adding fish just to have fish. Too many too quickly also is not good for your tank.

Before you think about other fish, take a look at your tank. In general if I remember correctly it is 3 months old, and has recently been moved to your new house.

What is your water testing at? I realize a few of your chromis are alive and well, what is the PH reading in the tank at this time? Remember Patience. Hawkfish really should be added at a later date. Also, with your chromis, adding clowns may prove to be a very aggressive tank. Once you get your clowns, let the tank settle for a few weeks. Find out how they are going to get along before you try any other fish.

You will come to find your clowns will be very aggressive towards any new tank mates. Especially if they are breeding.

I'd advise waiting a bit as well as you've just move the tank. Also, I'd suggest a small tank (10 gallon will do) to quarantine new fish. If you get something carrying any of the marine parasites, you don't want to add that to your tank. I've been answering quite a few marine disease/parasite questions, both in the forum and emailed to me lately!

This is a 40 gallon, right? Well, when you get a new fish here would be my suggestions:

Did you have a particular hawkfish in mind? I like longnose hawks, personally - they have a great personality! But hawks in general are a bigger fish and you should watch the stocking for your tank size. The longnose get around 5", not much of a swimmer, but they like to perch on rocks, plants, whatever in the tank. Also, remember these (any of the hawks) are red and white which you already have in the clown's coloration (unless you get orange skunk clowns).

How about a canary blenny or yellow clown goby or citron goby? You haven't got anything yellow yet. The canary is about 5", but thin and an active swimmer, and the gobys stay small (around 2" tops). Any one of those would work with what you're planning.

I haven't had the best experience w/ saltwater fish from petco. Chromis are really nice and normally quite hardy, so I'm sorry to hear that some didn't make it.

Blue Devil damselfish look good and they are normally not very expensive.

I would suggest no new fish. You keep adding fish not realizing what is going on in your tank. Have you even tested the water? You are getting PO'ed because you are just dumping fish into some water.

Test your tank. Start there. NO NEW FISH AT THIS TIME that is the kind of fish you should get.
