Let's assume that I want to manipulate people in to thinking well of me. In order to do this, I need to do something spectacular that will attract the attention of the media.

So I start my neighbor's house on fire with him and his family in it. I wait, while the fire builds in size and strength. And at just the right moment, I rush in among the flames and lead everyone to safety.

Am I a hero...or an arsonist? A great humanitarian...or a cynical criminal?

Oh, let's make the hypothetical a little more accurate (from a LIB's point of view):
Your neighbor's ancestors in UK were involved in the slave trade 300 years ago. Your neighbor's kids have recently begun to run right along your fence, as a shortcut coming hiome from school, and the fence JUST MIGHT actually be inside your property line.
So when you set the fire, what other choice did you have? Setting the fire was the right thing to do, and then rescuing your neighbor REALLY shows what a fine humanitarian you are.

Your neighbor complaining that his house burned down and his kids were at risk? Hey, it's fault for moving there and besides, NOW he's feeling the pain of those people who are losing THEIR homes because of the sub-prime market tanking.
