Communism is simply: From each according to his means to each according to his needs. That means that the government owns everything and it would be ideal if we could take out the human factors of money, power and greed. There is no free speech in communism and hard work gets you nothing more or less than doing little work.

Socialism is supposedly what is being used in the USA today. It's close to communism, in my opinion with the differences being the capitolist influence. You might take a look at Hugo Chavez who, unlike the United States uses what we have labeled socialism with facism while the US uses Socialism with capitolism. You can also look it up in the dictionary to the actual definition. But this is how it works.

Communism is a from of government that places the rule in the hands of the government for a common good.. versus our Democratic republic that places it in the hands of the people.

Socialism is how wealth is distributed.. it spreads the wealth out.. versus Capitalism that only gives it to those that get it.

Pure Communism or Pure Democracies would be wonderful. Pure Socialism or Pure Capitalism would not.

You ask what a socialist is? It's someone who believes we should be tipped to the side of socialism on the socialism/capitalism scale.

Of the three major social types the best way to describe is this.

Capitolism: You own the cow and the milk. You decide what you are going to sell for and who buys it.

Socailism: You own the cow but the milk is owned by the state. You can do anything you want to do with the cow as long as it benefits the state.

Communism: You will tend to the state's cow. Everything to do with the cow will be decided by the state and only by the state.
