ALWAYS go with your instinct. If you are not comfortable feeding her cereal, then don't do it. You are her mother, you know what's best. Especially if you are not thrilled with your current Dr. - don't follow the advice. As long as you are OK with being up with her, she's very young to start cereal. I think that Dr.s push that too much and our kids' appetites are enormous. She is much too young for spoon feeding, it would be futile. If you want to try something, you could add some cereal to her bottle and enlarge the nipple hole a bit, but that being said, I disagree with giving a newborn cereal. As long as she's growing, you're doing the right thing. Plenty of babies survive without extra food - don't set her up for childhood obesity.

It is definitely time to change doctors -- immediately. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding (or formula) for the first six months -- meaning no water, no juice, no baby food, and certainly NO CEREAL. You seem to already know this, but cereal cannot be digested by a baby that young and it will give her a tummy ache. I cannot believe your doctor recommended this. I would print up some articles, take it to his office, change doctors, and then consider reporting your doctor to the AMA. Spoon-feeding a two-month old is tantamount to child abuse! Here are some resources about delaying solids (including cereal) until at LEAST six months of age (by the way, you should NEVER put cereal in a bottle, either).

Don't give her cereal yet. Her digestive system isn't developed enough yet. She could develop severe digestive problems if it's given too early. Cereal should not be given until between 6 and 7 months of age. If you don't want to give her the cereal, then don't, she's YOUR baby. Also, putting cereal in a bottle is a great choking hazzard. Cereal should only be given by spoon contrary to what other people say.Your baby's getting all the nutrition she needs right now so don't worry about that. Good luck finding a new doctor! I think you need one.

I think that it is rediculous that you are looking for a new doctor because he told you to feed your baby!
Not all babies can wait until four or six months to eat or they would starve. I am the mother of three big babies. When they were born they weighed 8-1, 9-9, and 9-5. My first ate cereal when she was three months, my second at six weeks, and my third at eight weeks.
I think that it is time to feed babies when they eat 6-8 ounces every two hours like yours is. If you feed him then he will be a happier and more satisfied baby! Please do not starve him, or look for another doctor. Your doctor knows what he is talking about, and is doing what is right for your son as an individual.

Definitly a new doctor, and you should talk to the medical licencing board. Feeding cereal to a two month old is ridiculous, you know that, I know that, and the medical board knows that.
There should be a website for whatever and where ever your doctor is. Like the American Academy of Pediatrics http://www.aap.org/ or American Academy of Family Physicians http://www.aafp.org/afp.xml or Canadian Paediatric Society http://www.cps.ca/ or The College of Family Physicians of Canada http://www.cfpc.ca/English/cfpc/home/default.asp?s=1 (those are the ones I know).
All of them will have statements of standards. Of course some of those standards are sadly deeply influenced by big business and ludicrous, but to the best of my knowledge none recommend starting solids before 6 months (except in very rare circumstances). And of course nothing says a doctor has to go along with the standards (for examply ACOG says NOT to do routine ultrasounds, but women are generally in for a fight to refuse one -if not 5 or more)
Honestly though if you aren't happy with a doctor it is always best to find a new one. If one gives you a bad feeling that is a big sign. Or if you find that you have no respect for the doctor, or worse the doctor has no respect for you; you must find a new doctor. This is your family's health, you probably wouldn't hire a plumber that you didn't like, you certainly wouldn't hire them more than once -so why work with a doctor that you are not happy with?

Do NOT put cereal in a bottle. As far as spoon feeding the cereal...I have always heard not to before 4mos. BUT...my sister-n-law's youngest boy was an E-A-T-E-R. She just could not keep him satisfied so the doc said to start him on spooned cereal. He was 3 mos at the time. Some babies just need more, and as long as the doc suggested it...
There are a lot of things that are "no-nos" now that weren't 20 years ago, but somehow we are all still alive. As long as you stick to spooning only plain rice baby cereal in fomula/breastmilk ( and there is no history of that sort of allergy in family) things should be okay.

Wayyyyy to young for cereal. I started my daughter on cereal at 5-6 months. It seems like she is eating a good amount of formula. Why would they start her on cereal so early? My daughter is 9 months old and is eating 6 oz's every 3 hours and none overnight. She eats cereal and baby food, but she is older. I would find a new doctor. It doesn't seem right

You know my doc said the same thing when I had my 2nd child. I know his reasoning for this was because of the amount of formula my baby was taking in a day. I don't know if this rings the same for you but my son was 7 lbs even at birthand at 8 weeks he was almost 13 pounds! So my doctor and I decided he needed to start solids because of his weight and appetite and honestly it was a blessing. He stopped over drinking formula and was a much happier baby. My other children didn't start solids untill 4 months old and all of them are happy healty children..and no weight problems either!
By all means if you are unhappy with your doctor then seek a 2nd oppinion. Just remember all babies are different!!

If you are not comfortable with the advice your doctor is giving you, then you should absolutely switch. You are your baby's mother and know her better than anyone. If you don't think she is ready for cereal, don't give it to her. 2 months does seem kind of early to me. Mine didn't start on cereal until 4 months. You really need to feel comfortable with your child's pediatrician. After all, he/she is going to be a big part of your child's life for the next 17 years.
