One poster suggested using dental floss, which is a favorite of mine. Sometimes the dental floss doesn't blend in, so I've used embroidery floss in a matching color. The advantage of the embroidery floss is that if you don't separate the strands of thread, you get several strands holding the button on with each stitch. Just a couple of times through the button and it's on there for good.

If you have been having this problem for a while ,you might want to consider taking it to a seamstress and having them restring your buttons.
