Is it technologically possible? Yes, although practically speaking it would surely take quite a while to resolve all the technical difficulties.

Is it likely to happen any time soon? Heck no. Construction of a self-sustaining colony would require a huge amount of raw materials to be shipped in from Earth, at a stupendous cost. Just getting stuff into low earth orbit is horrendously expensive. Getting it to Mars, and then landing it on Mars, and assembling all the pieces together, would probably cost trillions of dollars. Economically speaking, there's really no way a Mars colony could justify the expense.

We'll establish space colonies before we establish a lunar colony, and we'll establish lunar colonies before we establish a Mars colony. Realistically, I see a Mars colony as being a minimum of a century away, but it may become feasible once launch costs go *way* down and large scale space travel becomes a routine matter.

all the raw materials you need to build a colony on Mars are already on Mars...its a PLANET for goodness sake, and, since 75% of Earth is covered in water, it has the same land mass as Earth, with only ( foggy memory here ) 1/3rd the gravity so everything can be built lighter.....you need energy sources ( a small nuclear reactor) and off you go..........food will be iffy for a while, granted, but Domino's Delivers, yes?

the trick to thinking about Mars is to think about how America was settled........you didn't bring houses with you, you brought tools......and you went on one way voyage; you sailed form Europe without planning on going back......if you build ships that don't have to do a return voyage....and landing....to Earth, its a whole lot simpler......

and if the West doesn't do it, you can bet your grandchildren's future the Chinese will

We could colonize Mars now if we were to follow Robert Zubrin's suggestions.

We will have colonists on the moon in 20 years, rotating through much like the scientists do in Antarctica.

In the near future, we will colonize and terraform Mars first. It will be comparatively easy, there will be billions of colonists living there in 200 years. Then we will terraform Venus and Callisto next, and they will be difficult.

We either colonize other planets or go extinct.
