This is really clear.
Red Dwarf. It holds the record for the longest pause in recording while the audience re-composed its self after 20 solid minutes of laughter.
No sit-com has ever come close.

My personal favorite of all time is Arrested Development. It may have only lasted 3 seasons, but it packed more jokes in to those 3 seasons than most sitcoms do in 8 or 9 seasons. Seriously, every episode had dozens of jokes, one after another, in rapid fire succession. There were visual jokes, call backs to previous jokes, references, foreshadowing jokes that only make sense an episode or two later, and jokes you might not pick up until the second or third time you've seen the episode. Sometimes there would be multiple jokes going on at once, and If you laughed too hard at one joke, you might miss the next one.
On top of the humor, it had a great cast. Jeffery Tambor, Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, David Cross, Portia DiRossi, Jessica Walters, among others. Not to mention great guest stars like Henry Winkler (the Fonz), Scott Baio, Dave Attel, Carl Weathers (possibly the greatest guest star ever) , Chalize Theron, Liza Minelli,Julia Louis Dreyfus, and a ton of others.
Fox, in ther infinite wisdom, cancelled it in the third season, despite that it was one of their few emmy winning shows.
I recommend it to everyone I know.

There are too many to name. For me, I would have to choose a top ten.
10. All In the Family - That show dealt with life like no other, and actually made people look at themselves and their beliefs.
9. Three's Company - The hilarious part of this show was that it dealt with co-habitation, which is still illegal in some states.
8. Good Times - The first show to deal with life in the ghetto.
7. Cheers - Life in a bar...
6. The Brady Bunch - There was always some hidden lesson in between the jokes.
5. Sanford & Son - It was funny to see Redd Foxx on tv, and he could make anything funny.
4. The Jeffersons - Another spin-off, that show was great with the interaction between George and Florence. George also made us look at ourselves and our beliefs.
3. Frasier - A show that was for the intellectually funny.
2. Roseanne - She dealt with real life, and the situations most people were in.
1. Friends - My all time favorite because the characters interact so well with each other, and every single one has an outrageous flaw that is over the top. It's too funny.

I have to differentiate between British and US sitcoms. For me the best British sitcom is "Only Fools and Horses." It was consistently well written and acted and had longevity. In terms of US sitcoms, I would say "Seinfeld." The topics that the show was based on were everyday events, or as Jerry and George would say "about nothing!" But the shows were amazingly funny and ahead of their time.

This won't be the most popular choice, I know, but I would nominate Married With Children, because it is, at first sight, a run-of-the-mill domestic sit-com, but is, in fact, extremely surreal. A profusion of excellent one-liners, too.
Tying with it, I would say Seinfeld. As everyone says, a show about nothing, but quite often consisting of several diverse story threads which all, somehow, inexplicably, come together by the end. (Plus the ultimate twist - Jerry & George Costanza writing a sit-com about nothing, which is actually the real life sit-com Jerry Seinfeld and Jason Alexander, as George, are in!)

Can't pick this questions to hard. It would have to be one of the older ones. When I was younger my favourites were The Good Life, Terry & June and then later Men Behaving Badly just some examples now it's Friends.

I am sure many will disagree... but Roseanne. That was SO realistic, bratty kids, losing jobs, lights getting shut off, clingy relatives, a mother that LITRERALLY drives you insane.. and the sound of her voice makes you NUTS... I love it.. I still watch re runs...
