OK I started a new job as an art director... which is a glorified graphic artist. I was there for five/six days and the president told me it wasnt working out. I was given a huge account to work on right away. I had to convert everything from quark to indesign... that takes time. I was not familiar with everything ... and it takes time. I feel like I wasnt given a fair chance and was wondering if anyone else agrees with me. You have to know people's styles.. where files are... and worked 12 hour days... didnt eat lunch. I was not a temp and feel that they didn't give me a fair chance. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening again? maybe ask in the interview for at least a month of training and learning the processes. I feel so bad about this. I needed this job. I did the work... the president wasnt happy with me ... and he mentioned in the beginning that he was not confident that I could do the work which wasnt a good motivator... why they hire me then? Suggestions? Thanks

In most states, your employment is "at-will", meaning that you or the employer can terminate your employment at any time, for any reason that ISN'T specifically prohibited by anti-discrimination laws.

It sounds like they may have needed you to do a specific task, and they had no intention of keeping you on-board long term.

I would try to get the president on the phone if I could, and ask him, "Now that it's over, can you tell me WHY it didn't work out?" Tell him you want to know so that you may avoid such errors in the future.

In any type of job you are normally looked at as on a probation period to see if you and the company is compatible and if one or the other is not satisfied then yes you will either be let go or you will quit either way. It is called the life of the corporate world as we know it no matter if you work in a high paying job or lower paying job.

He gave you a chance, you didn't live up to their expectations. Move on, get another job, get some experience. Go to work for their competitor.
