regular old situps. There are many variations to situps. The best is the one that works for you and doesn't put too much stress on the lower back. E.g. if you slide your feet under a support and stretch out on your back, make sure that your legs are not completely straight but your knees are bent, when you pull yourself up.
I personally use a mild form of situp where I lean back lying down support my weight on lower arms and elbow, then pull my slightly bent legs up vertically and a bit towards my stomach. I can do sets of 20 with this. Too vary the impact points on the abs, I can change the angle of leb bend at the knees or take the legs a bit off to the side while lifting. Once you get better you may want to bring your upper body movement into it by doing an upper body situp while your legs come up at the same time (like a scissor between upper body and lupper egs). You will have to bend the legs more, and you can keep the lower legs horizontal to the floor. You can put your hands behind your head or stretch your arms forward or sideways for balance. And then there are the more advanced exercises the footballplayers use...see internet.

There is no one best exercise for abs. There are several muscles that make up the abdominal muscle group. You need to do various exercises to target these individual muscles. I suggest getting a book on ab workouts or talk to a personal trainer. Make sure you are using correct form when doing ab exercise so as not to hurt your back.

The 3 top exercises are using the Captains Chair, Hundreds, and Hover.
Captains Chair- usually found at the gym, just lift knees to chest several times and you'll feel the burn. I like this one b/c it's less strain on your neck.
Hundreds- a pilates move- lay on your back, lift legs straight to the ceiling, life head, neck, and shoulders off the ground, and breath in for 5, out for 5- 10 times (until you've done 100 breaths)
Hover- get into a push up position or rest your elbows, forearms, and wrists on the ground- hold this plank position for as long as possible keeping a straight line from head to heel.

Good luck!

I agree with sanbox. My friend used to do an ab flips after doing crunches and hanging sit-ups. He would balance on his butt and then use his abs to pop himself off the ground. He did it just to seal in the ab excercises.

lay face down on the floor,
hold your self up with only your feet and elbow/hands touching the ground.

keep your body straight

Hold it there for one minute, five times.
It is deadly.
