Before I was married and had kids I would have said be a good person, enjoy life and be happy.

Now that I'm older, and married with kids, the meaning of life to me is clearly to have children, or basically the procreation of your species - if you want to get technical.

If you apply this question to the animal world, it would also be the procreation of the species. Take an Afrcian Lion for example; it eats, sleeps, craps, and breeds... what's the most important of all of those? Breeding.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

Life has very great meaning. it depends on people and their realisations of truth in life. For me life is an opportunity to work out karma and get self realisation and get salvation. All honoursand material posessions are just an illuution, if you think deeply. have you seen anybody staying permannently in this world, around us. Everyone leaves after some time. Then is it not a joke to tell somebody, to hurry up and get things done, like get honours and awards and positions. After retirement anybody look back to you with same respect. Your own oarents or wife or children can not treat with the same respect when you were a Director of an institute or Police officer. they start looking at you little sympathetically and negglect you sometimes, which they never done before, when you were in some position.

So in life, everything is changing. So in that changing world are you seeking permanency !!! It will be ajoke. So life is opportunity to get knowledge and remove Ajnan and get self realisation. Then you will get the real meaning of life. karma thus becomes the basis of the meaning of life. Do karma according to your understanding. So that realisation will follow it.

The meaning of life can mean to things depending on the term being used.
Conotative meaning (dictionary meaning)-to organically function
Denotative meaning (as in why live)- the meaning of life is to live, otherwise there would be death. And to not be born is to not having life which would make death impossible.

Most people have asked these questions. We want to understand the larger purpose and meaning of our lives. Without purpose, living day to day can become tedious and empty.
Fortunately, there are answers to these questions—answers that can give you a sense of purpose and help you find lasting happiness. Answers such as:

You are a child of God.
Before you were born, you lived as a spirit with God, your Heavenly Father.
You came to Earth to learn to be more like God.
When your life on Earth is over, you can return to live with your Heavenly Father.
